Varicose veins are tiny blood vessels located just under the skin’s surface. They are very fine and look like a mass of tangled thread.
Varicose veins are caused by an inability of the veins to pump blood back to the heart, which leads to the capillaries becoming permanently enlarged. The walls of the veins become stretched and less flexible. People who work mostly standing up or who tend to cross their legs have a higher risk of varicose veins, because these two positions prevent healthy blood flow. Some women are more prone to developing varicose veins during pregnancy, because of the added pressure on several veins in the legs due to the enlarged uterus and growing baby. .
